La Bohème at WNO
katywrightblog.wordpress.com, 2/11/2012, Katy Wright

Alex Vicens' velvety-voiced Rodolfo was brillantly cast, and his Act 1 aria "Che gelida manina" was a high point of the entire opera.
He also proved himself to be more than capable in terms acting, too: his utterly devoted Rodolfo made the opera's conclusion even more heartbreaking.

Vicens has an appealing stage manner, his Rodolfo was endearing and involving in ways that do not always happen. You could understand why Mimi might fall for him.
Vicens was ardent and intense, shaping the music nicely. The act 4 death scene for Mimi was one of the most moving, least stagey that I have ever come across; a testament both to Arden and to Vicens and Allen.

"WNO had fielded one of their strongest casts since 2010. Alex Vicens was that rarest of things, a convincingly young-looking Rodolfo, with a soaring, fluid tenor; Anita Hartig (a touchingly gauche Mimi) matched him for vocal star-quality. Both received well-deserved ovations, as did company regular David Kempster, playing Marcello as a perpetual student with just enough gravitas to act as a father-figure to Rodolfo – though Gary Griffiths (ebullient as Schaunard) ran him close for charm. Kate Valentine, meanwhile, was the Musetta of everyone’s dreams: utterly seductive"

....As Rodolfo, Spanish tenor Alex Vicens made an impressive start with “Che gelida manina”, both passionate and disciplined and with an attractive sense of line and phrase; this was a generally pleasing performance, with some fine moments and plenty of effective touches of characterisation. The duets of Mimi and Rodolfo were uniformly good, the voices very well balanced and complementary and a plausible ‘chemistry’ was created.

What a beautiful night of singing from a wonderful cast including Alex Vicens and Anita Hartig making glorious UK debuts as ‘the can't live with/can't live without' lovers.

"Brave and easy on the acute, tenor Alex Vicens had his best moments in the slow belcanto, reciting poetry with commendable gallantry."

The catalan Alex Vicens, who was already seen at the Miskolc Opera Festival, belongs to a category unusual in the Budapest Opera. It is a true spinto, a flexible voice, a pleasant personality on stage and a good match for Andrea Rost. In his repertoire appears il Duca di Mantova, and as "Rigoletto" is going to be played in November, he is worth to be invited again. "

"The way to sing honestly and without artifice of Rost and Vicens."

Alex Vicens, tenor from Barcelona, ist full of vocal health. The more lyrical he sings, the more admirable he is. Music still sounded at the end of Por el humo and the encore was already demanded.

A brilliant Alex Vicens as Fernando, whose generosity made the public go crazy.
